Sixteen-year-old singer Marcia Hines came to Australia from the US in 1970 for Hair, stayed for Jesus Christ Superstar, and became Australia’s most popular female pop star of the late 70s, voted ‘Queen of Pop‘ for three years. She is still a TV star in Australia as a judge on Australian Idol.

Thirty years ago I wrote a song, From the Inside, for my late Grandmother who is still one of my biggest inspirations. She’d always say to me, “Go on boy… You can do it!! Solo album by former Vernon Girls and Breakaways member Vicki Haseman under her married name (see under He’s A Rebel for more on The Breakaways).

Vicki’s husband was British musician Joe Brown. Their daughter is 80s pop star and session singer Sam Brown. The Breakaways’ first session as backing singers was Joe Brown And His Bruvvers’ A Picture Of You (1962, #2 UK).

Samantha Jones, who recorded the original of Don’t Come Any Closer, had also been in the Vernon Girls.

On the 1976 album Maggie MacNeal, by popular Dutch singer born Sjoukje Lucie van’t Spijker: ‘MacNeal’ is a play on the word ‘spijker’, meaning ‘nail’.

Maggie MacNeal was one half of Mouth & MacNeal, the originators of How Do You Do, a hit in Australia for Jigsaw.
